If you’re a snacker like me, you’ll probably find this blog very beneficial. I’m no health guru or anything like that, but I’ve taken interest in being a little more mindful of what I put into my body. Check out my 5 favorite healthy snack choices below:
1. Unsweetened Teas
Ok y’all, don’t freak out on me, especially my Southern sistas. I know y’all probably saw “Unsweetened Tea” and said, this girl done lost her mind! But let me explain…. so, on average, women should only be taking in about 25 grams of added sugar a day. I personally LOOOOOVVVVEEEE sweet tea, especially from places like Chic-Fil-A and Chicken Express. However, when I discovered that a MEDIUM tea from Chic-Fil-A (and I usually upsize to a large) contains 30 grams of sugar I had to make some changes! So what I do now is order an unsweetened tea and ask for a few packets of suga/*8r. This helps me satisfy my craving without without feeling so guilty.
2. Natural Juices
I love Ocean Spray 100% juices and their Lite and Diet juices. My favorites are their “Cranberry and Concord Grape Juice” and their “Pink Lite Cranberry Juice”. My son loves these too! These are great alternatives for sugary juices like Hawaiian Punch and Sunny Delight, just to name a couple. I also stumbled upon these delicious drinks by a company called “Sparkling Ice”. Their sparkling waters are the BOMB you guys and you can’t even tell there’s ZERO SUGAR ADDED! I would suggest these drinks for those of you who struggle with drinking too much soda. It’ll give you a lot of flavor with a little fizz!
3. Healthy Snack Ideas
If you’re a snacker like me, you probably find yourself buying a lot of chips, cookies, and candy just to pass the time or to snack on really quick when you don’t have time to eat a full meal. I personally love Sour Cream and Cheddar Ruffles, Chips Ahoy Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Gummy Bears, so girl trust me, I get it. It was really hard for me to try and cut out snacking cold turkey, so I decided to find some snacks that were tasty, but easier on the body. I actually discovered that snacking wasn’t the issue; it was what I chose to snack on. Now, I haven’t completely cut out my chips and cookies y’all, I just eat them a lot less and in smaller portions.
So here’s a short list of a few of my favorite healthy snacks…
· Nut Blends (Try to pick the ones that are low in sodium)
· Greek Yogurt
· Fruits (Bananas, pineapples, strawberries, and grapes are my favorite)
· Granola and Oatmeal Bars (low sugar options)
· Popcorn (light butter)
If you feel like you just can’t give up your favorite snacks yet, try buying the version with less fat/sugar. For example, whenever I go to buy a pack of Chips Ahoy Cookies, I reach for the reduced fat version.
4. Homemade Smoothies
The last snack alternative I’m going to recommend is good old homemade smoothies! I love making smoothies at home because I can make them however I like and I know exactly what’s going into them. My favorite smoothie recipes only require the fruits/veggies of your choice, juice, and ice. Sometimes I add almond milk for a protein boost, but other than that I keep it really simple. When choosing the juice you want to add, try one of those natural juices I mentioned earlier. Also, I’d suggest adding spinach/kale to your smoothies. It’ll change the color, but not the taste! I love this trick because I get to reap all the benefits of eating a cup of spinach without tasting it. Sounds too good to be true, but I guarantee you I’m speaking 100% facts! If you don’t have time to make your own smoothies at home, Smoothie King is a great alternative. They can be a little pricey, but they do allow you to customize your smoothie however you’d like.
So, to wrap up , I hope sharing some of my favorite snack/drink alternatives with you all will help each of you on your personal journeys to a healthier lifestyle. I’m no fitness or health guru, I’m just a young woman out here trying to love myself better by taking better care of my temple, just like all of you. As I always say, we’re all in this together! Let me know some of your favorite healthy snack/drink alternatives in the comments… I’d love to try them!
